Nightguards Vs. Bite Splits

You may think that nightguards (or bite guards) and bite splints are the same thing. While they both are oral appliances, each has unique purposes depending on what oral health condition you have.

Nightguards:

Protect your teeth if you suffer from chronic teeth grinding and clenching (bruxism). Nightguards snuggly fit over your teeth and are made from strong material that is resistant to the biting force of your teeth. They help keep bruxism from causing damage such as worn teeth, chipped or cracked teeth, or fractured teeth.

Bite Splints:

Relieve jaw pain due to TMJ disorder by stabilizing the jaw joints and muscles. TMJ splints also fit snugly over your teeth, but are designed to prevent teeth from coming together incorrectly (malocclusion) when your mouth is closed. These splints also help to keep your jaw in a more natural position to provide relief from pain or discomfort.
